Would you like to go Ice Floe Racing?

April 1, 2023

The Event took place on January 30, 1972 in the river, just below Fenelon Falls

From the 1972 Fenelon Falls Winter Carnival Program:

If you have never seen Ice Floe Racing, here is your chance. Can you imagine jumping on a piece of ice and racing down the gorge in the open water? “Some Sport” you say. Well the Trident Underwater Club of Peterborough have some hearty people who are going to entertain us with this water spectacle.

Starting at 1:30 PM they will demonstrate the equipment used for this event and put on an Ice Driving demonstration where they will actually go under the ice.

At approximately 2:30 PM the Ice Floe Race will begin with many participants from around this area. This is a timed race with the floes leaving from just below the Falls. The winning team will receive a trophy donated by Lincoln Lodge, Rosedale, Ontario.

These people are experts in this regard and know how to safely carry out this venture. As we will not be dressed for a dip in January, please stay off the ice and respect the decisions of the crowd control people.

There is no charge for this event for spectators—the Winter Carnival badge you will have purchased pays for expenses incurred.

Join us here for an event that will be remembered for a long time.
