In the first half of the twentieth century much care and concern went into having just the right hat for the occasion… at many outings, every lady would wear a beautiful hat. They were typically hand-made, and it took a lot of patience, skill and artistic ability to produce such striking creations. In Fenelon Falls, Myrtle Washburn operated a millinery shop with Rachel McFarland from 1902 to 1928—they were also good friends at the Baptist Church. Practically every lady in town appreciated their contributions to local fashion.
