Chemong Portage

August 4, 2026

An aerial view of Chemong Road and Bridgenorth

For generations leading up to the nineteenth century, canoes were the primary mode of transportation, and for travellers heading up the Trent Watershed, it was much more direct to portage from the Otonabee River to Chemong Lake, rather than paddling up the river, through Katchewanooka, Clear, Stoney, Lovesick and Lower Buckhorn Lakes. Murray Whetung of Curve Lake would say that his ancestors used to camp on this portage, under the pines on the top of the hill overlooking Chemong Lake (now the site of Bridgenorth’s Tim Hortons). It is one of the many old portages that live on as a modern road.
