A Dirty Thirties Vacation

December 2, 2021

The Interior of the Shack

We all know that the Great Depression was a particularly difficult time for many people—countless families lost their home or livelihood, many people did not have a job, my own grandmother pawned her engagement ring so that her children could have Christmas.

At the same time, it can be hard to imagine what all this meant in the practical terms for the people who lived through it. These photos are from a vacation visiting Fenelon Falls and Kinmount on the way to Elephant Lake, near Bancroft. These visitors enjoyed their time at the cabin canoeing, fishing and visiting friends. Their photograph album provides a unique vantage into life in the 1930s.
