Robert James McLaughlin was a prominent Lindsay barrister. This journal narrates his time articling with John McSweyn of 1883. He is a very factual narrator, and it is an interesting source for what he and his friends actually did that year. It notes the cases going through McSweyn’s office, social gatherings and outings, local camping trips and the Young Men’s Liberal Association—debating hot topics of the day like prohibition, the Pacific Railway, and whatever the (Conservative) Globe newspaper had the audacity to publish.
