Kirkfield Inn

Until a fire reduced it to ruins in 1925, the Kirkfield Inn was one of the largest and most luxurious options travellers along the Portage Road had when looking for a place to stay. Tudoresque in architecture, it is reminiscent of similar styles used for pubs and inns in the British Isles.

Trent Canal Bridge, Kirkfield

This hand-tinted postcard from around 1912 captures the stark beauty of a picturesque arch bridge designed to carry the Portage Road over the Trent Canal. Built from reinforced concrete, it was the fourth bridge constructed at this particular location, east of Kirkfield.
