Fenelon Township was created by a Crown survey in 1824, drawing an array of farm lots, that filled with immigrants over the generations that followed. In 1874, Fenelon Falls residents decided to become their own municipality so they could ensure that a railway was built to the village, hence the choice of a train its logo. The railway and the Trent-Severn Waterway facilitated the community becoming a tourist destination and the home of the region’s largest sawmill. In twentieth century, wooden manufacturing, like Allen Wood Products and its Tinkertoys eclipsed lumber exports as the largest employer. By the end of the century, manufacturing was in decline. Fenelon Falls was amalgamated into the City of Kawartha Lakes in 2001, shortly after celebrating its 125th anniversary. By then, the railway had recently been reincarnated as the Victoria Rail Trail. As a recreational corridor the old railway is enjoyed by countless visitors each year—more than ever took the train.
