- Physician 1861 (Approx.) - 1878 (Approx.)
A Hugh Bigham is listed in the 1861 Census of Fenelon Township as a 32 year-old doctor. The 1871 census again lists him a 44 year-old Irish-born Presbyterian; however, in most of the directories and newspapers the name is given as Bingham. To confuse matters, there are two physicians named Bingham (Henry and Hugh) in the early directories and I am assuming they are the same man.
Bigham must have arrived in the village in the early 1860s and appears to have stayed until 1878. By 1880 he had set up a practice in Manilla [CP 1 Oct. 1880; 2]. Suggitt claims Bingham moved to Coboconk after his home was destroyed by fire (Suggitt, 262), but I have found no evidence of this, and he is not listed under Coboconk in D&B in 1880 or 1881. Hugh Bingham died at age 56 in Manilla on April 15, 1882, of an accidental drug overdose. Rumours of suicide circulated in the village but were never proven, or “seriously considered” [FFG 29 April 1882; 2].
22 Variant spelling, Henry Bigham, and Bingham.
23 In addition, there is a James Bingham listed in the 1871 census practicing medicine in Dummer Township, Peterborough County.
24 Bigham is listed in Manilla in the July 1881 ed. of D&B.
